It’s Thanksgiving. It’s Claire Hamilton’s favourite time of the year. That can only mean one thing…time for a Clearbox blog on Thanksgiving!
When I am lucky enough to be home in New York for Thanksgiving dinner, I have a tradition of asking my family to go around the table and say what they are most thankful for. As you can image, this request usually comes with a few eye rolls but when all is said and done this little tradition always brings a smile to our faces and reminds us what the holiday is truly about – being grateful.
While I think this time of year is really special and it is important to take a moment to reflect on what we are thankful for, I also believe there is power in practicing gratitude year-round. In fact, I would be as bold to say that expressing gratitude is key to living a happy, well-balanced, healthy and meaningful life.
We live in a world that is constantly telling us that you need better and more. More clothes, more friends, a better car, a better home…the list goes on. You could easily spend a lifetime constantly feeling inadequate, which is why gratitude is so important for keeping us grounded and focused on the what truly matters.
There are many ways to bring gratitude into your life that don’t take that much time like keeping a weekly gratitude journal, writing a thank you note to a loved one or lifting the phone to call someone special that has done something nice for you. You’d be surprised of the little things you can stop and be grateful for that mean so much but easily go missed – strawberries in the grocery store during the winter, FaceTime calls to your mom when you miss her, an extra blanket when you’re cold or a hug from the person you love in the morning.
I brought this concept of gratitude to the team and asked them to share what they are most grateful for this year. I was overwhelmed with some of the heartfelt messages and it is my hope that this little exercise also brought a smile to their faces. Team, I am grateful that you took the time to share your thoughts!
Having the ability to appreciate and return kindness is what fulfils us as humans. Gratitude is important to me as it helps me to look at the bigger picture. Whenever I am facing those trivial everyday issues which present themselves, gratitude helps to give me perspective. I am thankful mostly for my family, friends and parmesan truffle fries (of course).
Living in Canada for two years gave me a real appreciation for Thanksgiving and everything it stands for. I think if NI adopted this concept, it would greatly benefit us. This year, I am so grateful for the people I’m surrounded by. With that said, I wanted to show some gratitude to each of the team members here at Clearbox.
Claire H, your energy is infectious. You have a unique ability to lift someone up and motivate them to work and push harder, and as I get to know you better, I admire your sass and fire more and more. Kerry, your work ethic is incredible and you’re such a laugh. In your short career, I think you’ve struck a fine balance between personality and professionalism that took me years to master, I admire you for this. Mollie, you’re stunning. You’re such a hard worker and strive for the best, you’re just awesome. John, the OG cagna cattivo. An incredibly hard worker and pushing us all to do better, I have a lot of respect for you. Charlotte, the swan. You have it all together and nothing phases you, but your work ethic, coverage generation and efficiency are unmatched, I think you’re a real asset to the team. Claire B, rock-star, somehow managing to balance your workload with overseeing others and checking in with people, you’re just incredible and I’m learning from you every day. Alex, you have such a grasp of your client work with such a great ability to recount the most intricate of details upon request. You’re fantastic at your job and I always look forward to chatting through topical stories and news with you... sadly enough! Amy, you’ve come into the team with such eagerness to learn and fantastic ability. You’re incredibly professional and have taken on quite challenging work without hesitation, you’re doing so well. Dani, I so appreciate your approach and always look forward to hearing your take on something. I look forward to working more with you in 2020! Rachel, I think you’ve made such a fantastic impact in your short time here and I hope that you continue to flourish in PR. Vicci, I think you have come in and just made everything better. You balance great craic and professionalism beautifully. You don’t take yourself too seriously and you ensure that even the smallest of details are perfected. Last but not least, Anna, my fellow Christina superfan, I look forward to working with you more and more. Who better to learn from than the Head of Excellence herself!?
I’m truly grateful to be working as part of a team of people that I enjoy seeing day in and out. Here’s to you, Clearbox team. Happy Thanksgiving!
It’s often human nature to want more, to want to be more and to be unsatisfied with things the way they are. However, I think it is extremely important to be grateful for everything we already have. However little or large, we have to appreciate what we’ve got. I like to take time regularly to reflect on all of the things I am grateful for. It can be too easy to get caught up in life, take things for granted and not see what I do have or how content I actually am.
2019 has been a big year for me so I have a lot to be thankful for. I am thankful to everyone at Clearbox for taking me under their wing and showing me that a career in PR might just be right up my street. I am incredibly thankful that I don’t dread going to work every day and my first adult job is turning out to be rather enjoyable. The team are the most welcoming bunch of people and have made my integration absolutely seamless. I am eternally grateful for friends, family and of course the significant other in my life. The important people that I’m surrounded by shouldn’t go a day without knowing how appreciated they are and how truly grateful I am to have them all in my life. I’m also so grateful for the time that I get to spend with said important people - I love being back home in Northern Ireland and close to my family. Yes, I have material things but when it comes to what I’m truly grateful for, it’s all about the people.
For me, gratitude is one of the most fundamental things to making any relationship with another human work. Everyone wants to feel appreciated and valued, so I think it is vital to say thank you to people when they have done things for you.
I am most thankful for the amazing people that are doing great things. Watching organisations like Children in Need, working on Amazon’s Community Programme and being introduced to so many wonderful charities reminds me that there are a lot of generous and caring people doing their best to help people. I think it’s very easy in such polarising times to think everyone is out for themselves and hateful but there is a lot of good in the world and I’m thankful for that.
When I was a LOT younger, I really wasn’t very grateful. I know this sounds terrible but I didn’t have much of an awareness with regards to just how hard my mum, dad and all the people around me were working to keep me happy, healthy and safe. Thankfully I grew up in a fantastic environment, because of all their efforts and realised that my mum was right. Not everyone has what I have. This realisation has led me to be very grateful for everything I have and for those around me that make great things happen. Reflecting on this year I am most thankful for all my family and their health.
The combination of a having a close family who are healthy is a privilege in my eyes. It allows my mum and dad to jet off on at least six holidays a year, some which have included my brother, sister, myself, our husbands and wives, my mother in law and grandkids! We have great family get-togethers and my own kids get to spend precious and enjoyable time with their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. In the past we have had some difficult years, so I am grateful for every minute, day, week and year we get to enjoy together as a family!
I love this time of year because I think everyone is a lot more aware of being grateful for what they have, and the people around them, and it’s an infectious atmosphere! This year, I’m most thankful for the support I’ve had both in and out of the office. 2019 has been a pretty busy year for Clearbox, and it means a lot to have a solid team around you (including some new team members that have joined along the way!) Outside of work, my family, and my fiancé in particular, have been absolute rocks and have helped keep me grounded and calm in what has been the most hectic year! BIG thank you’s all round!
Practicing gratitude is something that I have really tried to embrace in 2019. I do it on a weekly basis (daily is my 2020 goal) and I find that forcing my brain to think back over positive moments I have experienced, can be very therapeutic.
I was gifted The 6-Minute Diary for my birthday which has been a big motivation for me and just filling out the pages has helped change my outlook on things. The idea is that you spend three minutes journaling in the morning to help start your day motivated, grateful and optimistic, and then three minutes in the evening to train your brain to focus on what went well. I typically do this on a Sunday and in terms of what I’m grateful for, the themes are often the same - to love and to be loved, great friends and family, good health, a job I enjoy, food in my belly, money in the bank, a roof over my head, a warm bed to sleep in, fresh air and being able to read.
To me, thankfulness goes hand in hand with joyfulness. You could be having the worst day or be going through circumstances that you don’t think you can find any good in, and still be thankful. I think a deep-rooted heart posture of gratitude doesn’t overlook the little, everyday things in light of bigger things.
This year I’m very thankful for relationships and friendships that have stood the test of time. I’m absolutely always thankful for these relationships, but since we’re drawing into the season of family and friends it seems particularly apt.
I’m grateful for Liam Gallagher, the button that allows you to turn off notifications in Slack, David Bowie, currywurst, the battery in my watch lasting two whole weeks on a single charge and dogs.
